Sea of Cortez Region goes for decarbonization; here's how the project will work

Sea of Cortez Forum signs agreement with ClimateTrade and Spectrotec to execute the Sea of Cortez Region Carbon Neutral Target 2030 project

The Sea of Cortés Region aims to become the world's first decarbonized economic region and thereby contribute its share to the world's Sustainable Development Goals specifically in the fight against the spread of the climate changefor which this Thursday within the Summit 2022 was presented on project Sea of Cortez Region Carbon Neutral Goal 2030.

For this purpose, Foro Mar de Cortés signed an agreement with ClimateTrade y Spectrotec to implement this project.

What does this project consist of?

José Ramón CasillasSpectrotec's president and CEO, explained that the goal of this project is to achieve the decarbonization products and services in the region, involving society as a whole to achieve neutrality.

"The carbon footprint is the measurement of the emission of all greenhouse gases that we generate in our daily lives; carbon neutral is the state that maintains the emission of greenhouse gases equal to zero, that is to say that the economic activity that I do or execute generates a certain carbon footprint, but at the same time I have a mechanism that allows me to neutralize it by turning it into zero," he commented.

The phase one is the registry of sustainable projects in the region for the generation of carbon credits.

This is how it will work

  • The project has a calculator that allows us to know how much carbon footprint each activity or action generates in both companies and individuals.
  • The Sea of Cortez Forum will promote or create projects in the region that are sustainable, verified and reviewed by international organizations to achieve certification for the generation of carbon credits.
  • These projects must demonstrate that they can avoid the generation of greenhouse gases or that they can subtract and steal carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The verifier calculates how many tons of CO2 it avoids or removes from the atmosphere.
  • For each ton of CO2 avoided or removed by the project, a carbon credit is issued.
  • This carbon credit is traded on a one-time basis.
  • A given company can purchase the carbon credits needed to offset the percentage of the carbon footprint it emits for its product, service or event.

Phase two is the micro offset of the carbon footprint in the Sea of Cortez region.

"Through technological innovation, it allows us to generate a blockchain chain so that I, who offset my carbon footprint, receive my inviolable certificate with the traceability of the data of where my money went, what project was helped and how many tons of carbon I removed from the atmosphere or avoided thanks to my contribution," explained Casillas Luque.

What is micro compensation?

It is the compensation of the carbon footprint that can be made by any person through the purchase of a decarbonized product or service.

Sea of Cortez Forum will initiate a process of affiliation of companies, chambers of commerce, organizations and foundations in the region, from any line of business or sector, that wish to join the project by creating decarbonized products and/or services.

"Let's think about this hotel, which sells a suite worth 2 pesos and there is a decarbonized suite worth 2.5, 3 pesos, we create the decarbonized product, I buy the decarbonized suite and at that moment the traceable money goes, through blockchain, to the project that Foro Mar de Cortés through its leadership decides," highlighted the Spectrotec representative.

What is blockchain?

Blockchain technology allows for the traceability of any transaction and to verify that it has been carried out, in addition to the information that is sent to whoever purchases the carbon credits and how much money ends up in the hands of the developer.

Microcompensation channels

Digital channels: Through online payment by means of voluntary compensation of the carbon footprint generated by a product and/or service.

Point-of-sale terminal: Through a pre-selected amount, the customer can contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of their purchase / service / experience through card payment at the Point of Sale (POS) device. You will get a QR code on the purchase ticket linked to the original certificate of cancellation of offset credits.

Product or service neutral: It will be the first economic region in the world that, in an aligned and coordinated way, adds to its current catalog of products / services from different sectors, with the possibility of choosing the sustainable and carbon footprint neutral ones, as the compensation involved is included in the PVP contracted by the client. It allows its commercialization by tour operators, search engines, etc.

Carbon Neutral Marketplace: It is the marketplace for carbon neutral tourism experiences, products and services to strengthen the consolidation of the Carbon Neutral Economic Region project with a 2030 goal for Climate Sustainability, including compensation in the PVP of the product, service and/or experience.

Ana Karen ZapataClimateTrade representative, emphasized that by generating these projects Sea of Cortez Forum will help drive a sustainability strategy that will enable the financing of sustainable projects in the region with local compensation.

"I am sure that this will make a lot of noise, it is a project that we are all in love with, we invite everyone to participate in this initiative, businesses, companies, citizens, we will echo this, we will work, we will give it strength," he invited.

ClimateTrade and Spectrotec micro will offset the carbon footprint generated by the Summit 2022 and will deliver to Foro Mar de Cortés the certificate of the tons of CO2 it is neutralizing.
