La Sauceda is a wetland located in the eastern part of Hermosillo which for many years was one of the favorite places for leisure and recreation of the people of Hermosillo, until it was abandoned in 2012.

This natural park with a surface area of 40 hectares is located east of Sonora's capital and was inaugurated in 1994. Seepage from the Abelardo L. Rodríguez Dam They formed a lagoon that gave life to green areas and on one side were installed pools, slides, children's games, an interactive museum that until 10 years ago were used by families for recreation and learning, until the space was closed.

Begins its rehabilitation

In early October, the Government of Sonora inaugurated the beginning of the rehabilitation of this space, after a long struggle of civil organizations to rescue this iconic space of Hermosillo.

More green areas are needed

The master's degree in environmental engineering highlights that Hermosillo has a high deficit of green areasThis is why the rescue and creation of this type of spaces that generate many benefits to the people is so important.

"I think the important thing has been that this whole social movement has made society realize that there is a deficit (of green areas) and that we want to reverse this problem," he says.

Lopez Ivich comments that there are native species with low water consumption that can be used to improve and increase the vegetation cover in La Sauceda and throughout the city of Hermosillo, with all the benefits that this generates.

He explains that a greener city improves humidity and air conditions, reduces heat islands, lowers temperatures, improves hydrological cycles for water capture and aquifer recharge, and environmental conditions in general.

Therefore, the rescue of La Sauceda is a crucial point in the sense that there will have to be many more projects like this one to improve Hermosillo's environmental conditions, he says.
