Electric public transportation for Hermosillo? Researchers analyze feasibility
Study duration of truck loading, whether it requires more energy with air conditioning use of the unit or if it decreases its range; plan is to reach zero emissions

The public transportation is a high generator of greenhouse gas emissions. greenhouse gasesTherefore, the possibility of adopting units with an electric system would be a great step forward in the search to reduce the pollution generated by this sector.

At HermosilloThe results of the research will tell them whether the project is viable, informed the University of Sonora.

The educational institution emphasized that the academics Federico Cirett Galán y Raquel Torres Peralta collaborate with the researcher Alejandro Covarrubias Baldenebro in a research external to the University of Sonora, entitled "Contributing to decarbonize Mexican cities through an ecosystem of electric transportation and sustainable mobilities: Case studies and intervention in two polar cities".

The study is being conducted in Cuernavaca, Morelos; and Hermosillo, Sonora.

Cirett Galán pointed out that they are working with a project of the National Strategic Programs (Pronaces), which seeks to see if it is feasible to include electric public transportation in Hermosillo and Cuernavaca.

"We are seeing if the truck load can last all day, if they need much more load due to the use of air conditioning, if it decreases the range to the unit, that is what we are investigating," he specified.

The academic explained that public transportation uses diesel, a fuel that generates more pollution than gasoline when burned, so if the combustion engine is removed it will be zero emissions.

"The trucks go all over the city, from north to south and from east to west, so if we can remove that pollution from there, it would be great; and the benefit to dealers is that an electric-powered truck requires much less maintenance than a diesel-powered one, and the operating cost is much more in a diesel vehicle than an electric-powered one, we are talking about up to one-sixth of what it costs to operate a diesel truck," he said.

Using electric vehicles will allow air quality in the city to improve and although not all energy sources are clean, they occur outside the city and are already in the process of converting them into renewable and clean energy sources, said Cirett Galán.
